Mestre, Safadi named Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week
Keyano College Huskies Athletics announced today that Women’s Futsal student-athlete Marissa Mestre (Hamilton, Ont.) and Men’s Futsal student-athlete Bahaa Safadi (Fort McMurray, Alta.) have been named the Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 18, 2026.
The pair were key players for their respective sides as the Women’s Futsal Huskies went 2-0-1 and the Men’s Futsal Huskies went 3-0-0 while hosting the first Northeast Regional Tournament.
“Marissa continued her all-star performance from outdoors, bringing that effort to the futsal court with her scoring and ability to draw the opposing players to her and open up space for her teammates all over the court,” Head Coach Julian Carr said. “She was a superior enough threat that she often would draw two defenders to her and find a teammate to finish the play.”
Mestre scored a single goal in the Huskies’ 3-2 win against The King’s University Eagles and was invaluable in creating chances for her teammates throughout the rest of the tournament.
Bahaa Safadi was a star on the home futsal pitch for the Keyano Huskies to open the 2026 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Futsal season.
After his team opened their tournament with a 3-2 win over the Lakeland Rustlers, Safadi boosted the Huskies to a two-win day with the game-winning goal in a 3-2 win over The King’s University Eagles.
Sunday, Safadi helped his side earn a full nine points with a pair of goals on four shots in a 5-2 win over the Portage College Voyageurs. For his efforts in Sunday’s win, Safadi earned Player of the Game honours.
“Bahaa was great all weekend and has really taken a big step forward in his development and maturity as a player,” Head Coach Niels Slotboom said. “It has been great to see another local talent come into our program and shine.”
The Huskies Futsal teams are in action next on February 7-8, taking part in the second Northeast Regional Tournament hosted by The King’s University Eagles.
