Fontaine, Torchia named Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week
Keyano College Huskies Athletics announced today that Women’s Soccer student-athlete Heidi Fontaine (Fort McMurray, Alta.) and Men’s Soccer student-athlete Tano Torchia (Kamloops, B.C.) have been named the Keyano Huskies Athletes of the Week for the week ending September 14, 2025.
The pair played key roles in the Huskies first road trip of the season, with the Women’s Soccer team splitting their two games and the Men earning a draw Friday before taking a one-goal loss. Torchia scored his first goal of the season in Saturday’s defeat.
“Halfway through the second game we had to play Heidi out of position as a centerback, which she doesn’t have a lot of experience in, but she really stepped up and made sure that she did her job,” said Head Coach Niels Slotboom. “In the first game of the weekend she was very solid as well where she contributed going both forward and in the defending side.
“Overall, it was a really strong weekend defensively.”
Fontaine earned recognition as the Player of the Game in Saturday’s match. The second-year McMurrayite defender is currently enrolled in the Business Management program at Keyano College. Fontaine has appeared in 11 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) regular season games and was part of last year’s squad that earned an ACAC Bronze Medal.
Torchia struck for his first goal of the season in Saturday’s 2-1 loss to the NAIT Ooks. The goal was his first since October 2023.
“That was massive,” Slotboom said of Torchia’s goal. “It’s big for him because I think we can all see that he’s doing very well and is so far ahead of where he was a year ago after the injury.
“For someone like him who wants to score goals and contribute in that way, he needed one to break through. You could tell the whole weekend as soon as that happened, he was a bit more free and a bit more back to himself.”
Currently enrolled in the Environmental Technology program at Keyano College, Torchia has appeared in 16 ACAC Regular Season games, starting 15 of them. In that time he’s registered three goals and three assists. Torchia is a two-time ACAC Champion, having won both titles in Men’s Soccer and Men’s Futsal in his rookie season with the Huskies.
Both Keyano Huskies Soccer teams are back on the home pitch at SMS Equipment Place this coming weekend, hosting the Concordia Thunder. Kick-off is at 2:00pm Saturday and 12:00pm Sunday with the Women’s game first followed by the Men’s game. Admission is free for all fans.
