Women's Volleyball Huskies look to regroup after losses on the road
It wasn’t the opening weekend the Keyano Huskies Women’s Volleyball team had hoped for after a pair of defeats on the road against the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves.
“We didn’t come out very well on Friday,” said Head Coach Tommy Sloan. “We made lots of good adjustments on Saturday, played a much better game and just got unlucky at the end. The progress from day-to-day was good.
“Now we just know that the next ones are big.”
The Huskies lost Friday’s match in straight sets (28:26, 25:17, 25:22) and then in five sets (18-25, 24-26, 25-18, 25-16, 14-16) Saturday.
Friday’s results saw four Huskies stand out on the offensive side of the ball, with Milan Schapowal and Amanda Onyeukwu each tallying six kills. Gabrielle Buffong had five kills in the match while Erika Box did as well in addition to 17 assists and seven digs.
Libero Rory Bell led the ream with 13 digs in the match.
“This weekend showed what we want to work on,” Sloan continued. “We had a good talk as a group on Saturday and they understand what’s going to be required to be prepared for the week. Friday night we get the Queens of the south right away.
“We know this league is very balanced top-to-bottom and so everybody is good. We just approach it the exact same way and make sure that we’re prepared.”
Saturday’s match saw Adyson Wilson showcase her game with 17 kills and 11 digs. Onyeukwu earned 12 kills to go along with a team-leading 12 digs. Buffong and Schapowal each contributed eight kills while Box recorded 36 assists, four kills, and 10 digs.
Drew Jacobson rounded out a quarter of Huskies with double-digit digs, recording 11 from the libero position.
The Huskies will now prepare for their first home weekend with two formidable matchups in the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens and Olds College Broncos.
First serve is scheduled for 5:00pm Friday and 1:00pm Saturday at the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre.
