Men's Soccer Huskies stay perfect, but still in search of perfecting process
While the Keyano Huskies Men’s Soccer team got the results they wanted in their first home weekend of the season, the process to get there still needs plenty of work according to Head Coach Niels Slotboom.
“A 5-1 win is a good start for a home opener,” he said following Saturday’s win. “NWP probably should’ve finished a couple more of our mistakes. It’s something that we put on ourselves, some bad decisions across the field that lead to those types of opportunities.
“In a way, I’m happy that we got punished for it because sometimes that’s what a team needs to understand that we can’t skip on the details.”
Saturday’s result featured goals from Cleisson Anklam and Joshua Fitzpatrick bookending a surprise hat trick from centre back Jacob Marshall, the first three goals of his 33-game ACAC career.
“It was pretty good. First goal of the ACAC career; I’m happy,” Marshall said following his Player of the Game performance Saturday. “I was shocked; standard stuff.”
“That’s his first time ever scoring for us, and he decides to put three in in one game; all nice ones as well,” Slotboom said of his captain. “Who knows what happens to Jacob Marshall after this.”
The one chance that was buried by the Wolves, coming in the 82nd minute off the foot of a free kick from Ivan Romanchuk, was narrowly missed on a clearing attempt by the Huskies’ defence.
Sunday, the Huskies completed their six-point weekend as Jaiden McLaren picked up the win and clean sheet. Goals from Michael Lungu, Shakir Mitha, and Anklam featured offensively for the Huskies.
“We can show that every year we get scoring from all different parts of the field, which is a big strength of ours,” Slotboom continued. “We don’t only have one person necessarily that gets all the goals. We can score from all different parts of the field, set plays or regular run of play. That’s a big strength of ours.”
Taking the final score out of the equation, Slotboom made it clear more was needed from the group as they shift into two must-win weekends.
“Today, very sloppy,” Slotboom said of his group. “I think a lot of the pressure that came was invited by a lack of detail in our play, which is something that we’ve been really harping in on the guys. It’s something that’s not quite coming out so it’s something that we’re really working on for the upcoming week here. It has to be better when we play against a team like Lakeland.
“Overall, we can’t really complain. We’ve had a big weekend with six points, took care of that part of it. Now, we’ve got to make sure we’re better again next weekend.”
The Huskies will head to Lloydminster to take on the Lakeland College Rusters September 21 and 22. Kick-off for both games is at 2:00pm.
