Women's Soccer Huskies move back into playoff spot with four-point weekend at home
In a do-or-die weekend, the Keyano Huskies Women’s Soccer team collected four of a possible six points to vault themselves back into a playoff spot in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) North Division.
“We should’ve done a little bit better in the second game by taking our chances, but I think overall pretty good,” said Head Coach Niels Slotboom. “King’s was solid and we did some things really well. Other things we should’ve been a little bit stronger on, but overall a good weekend.”
Hosting The King’s University Eagles, another team in the middle of the North Division, the Huskies earned a 2-1 win Friday followed by a 1-1 draw Saturday in the heavy rain.
“I think it was a very competitive weekend,” noted second-year defender Addyson McLean. “The other team gave us a lot of competition this weekend, but our team came in strong and I think we finished very strong.”
After conceding an early goal Friday, Rofyda Khaleel scored in the 43rd minute to level the game and Marissa Mestre scored her program-leading 39th goal in the 75th minute to push the Huskies ahead.
Saturday’s draw featured a lone goal by Nathalie Andersson, tying her single season career-high of eight, as each team took a single point from the matchup.
With the team now two-thirds of the way through their season, the consistency issues from the first half of the season aren’t playing a huge part now according to Slotboom.
“It’s getting better every single game, which you would expect,” he noted. “We’re over half of the season now so everybody has had some experience both right and wrong and they’re building that up to bring that consistency now.”
At a pivotal time of their season, the Huskies are on a 2-0-1 streak in their last three games, which has them in third place in the division, one point ahead of this coming weekend’s opposition, the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves, and two points ahead of The Eagles.
“The team’s definitely coming together,” added McLean. “I think we’re all connecting very well and I think it’s going to look good going forward.”
The Huskies hit the road to Grande Prairie, Alta. For games Saturday and Sunday against the Wolves. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:00pm Saturday and 12:00pm Sunday.
