Women's Soccer Huskies find form in 12-0 victory against Voyageurs
With just a single game on their weekend schedule, a home date against the Portage College Voyageurs, it was more important for the Keyano Huskies Women’s Soccer team to return to the processes that had made them successful rather than the final result on the scoreboard.
“They played well; they played as a team today,” Head Coach Tiffany Fontaine said. “It was important for us to just get back out on the field and connect the way we’ve been working.
“We got to work on some attacking runs and some finishing with the score, which will set us up for this coming week to be in a better mind frame and a positive mind frame moving forward.”
The result on the scoreboard at full-time, 12-0 in favour of the Huskies, mimicked similar results from other top teams in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) against the Voyageurs. However, with last weekend’s results leaving a bitter taste in their mouth, the flexing of their offensive muscles was needed to shift the mood more positively ahead of next weekend.
“It feels good,” Harleen Singh said. “It’s what we needed as a team, and we all know what these next few weeks look like for us. It’s building the momentum we need heading into some of the most important games of the season.”
Singh had a hat trick and four assists to lead the way while Marissa Mestre scored twice, including the game-winning goal in the opening minute of the contest.
Natalie Orellana also scored twice while Khloe Webber, Madison Tyson, Chloe Gauthier-Schaub, and Ayla Taller found the back of the net once each. Third-year Huskie Luca Van Rijn rounded out the scoring with the first goal of her ACAC career in her final home regular season game.
“I felt good after the performance today, being able to help assist and set up goals all across the team is always a great feeling,” Singh added. “Seeing new faces score and new faces get points is rewarding to see.”
“Har was just involved in everything today,” Fontaine said of the fifth year from Calgary, Alta. “It was hard not to reward her with the player of the game. She constantly was sending crosses in, the shots were on, beautiful balls on the ground hitting people’s feet. She was a key contributor all across.”
While the weekend’s results were favourable for the Huskies, there’s now a log jam of four teams separated by four points vying for the final spot in the ACAC’s North Division.
The Huskies have sole possession of that spot for the moment, but this weekend’s clashes on the road against the third-place King’s University Eagles and first-place Concordia Thunder force them into must-win scenarios once again.
“We’re just trying to make sure we’re aligning with the competitors,” Fontaine said. “We’re fighting for top three [in the division], so making sure that we are getting the stats and the points that we need just like our competitors.”
The Huskies face-off against the Eagles Saturday at 2:00pm followed by a 12:00pm date with the Thunder Sunday.
