Women's Soccer Huskies face game postponement, loss in opening weekend
It was a rocky start to the 2024 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) outdoor season for the Keyano Huskies Women’s Soccer team, who took a loss at the hands of the Concordia Thunder and had another game ended prematurely.
“A little bit disappointing to start your first game and then to stop at half time due to air quality,” Head Coach Tiffany Fontaine said. “The refs did a good job; it was the right call.
“At the same time, when you’re up 1-0 and you’re feeling good and you feel like you’ve got your opponent, just unfortunate to not finish that game what was looking like a good outcome.”
Up 1-0 after the first half in Saturday’s season-opening match against The King’s University Eagles, the game was postponed due to air quality. Sunday against the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder, a narrow 2-1 result gave the Thunder the victory.
“They were in control of the game at parts, which was extremely exciting to see where we’ve grown from beginning of preseason to now,” Fontaine said of her side against the Thunder. “Unfortunately we just couldn’t put some away even though we were right in their six-yard box.
“We have a few weeks now to prep to come up against them again.”
Natalie Orellana’s 24th goal of her ACAC career was the lone offence for the Huskies in the match. Gaelyn Verdin made six saves in the loss.
As one of four teams sitting at zero points, the Huskies will look to make up ground on their home turf this weekend when they host the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves for a pair of games.
Saturday’s match kicks off at 2:00pm with Sunday’s game getting started at 12:00pm. Admission is free for all with the Men’s games following the conclusion of each Women’s match.
