Women's Futsal Huskies enjoy strong start to 2025 ACAC Futsal season
The Keyano Huskies Women’s Futsal team opened their 2025 campaign with a near-perfect start, going 4-1 at the first North Regional Tournament.
“It was a good performance overall,” Nathalie Andersson said. “For having so many new people along with the old players as well, I thought the results were good.
“We can definitely work on where we left off and be stronger for the next round.”
The Huskies weekend started with a 4-0 win against the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves and continued with a 7-2 triumph against The King’s University Eagles.
In their lone loss of the weekend, the Huskies fell 2-0 to the NAIT Ooks before rebounding to earn a 5-2 win against the Lakeland Rustlers and 9-0 victory against the host Portage College Voyageurs.
“I think we definitely could’ve pulled off a win with NAIT, but we learned from our mistakes, and we’ll come back stronger than ever,” added Norah Horsley, who struck twice for the Huskies against the Rustlers to earn Player of the Game honours.
Marissa Mestre accounted for six of the Huskies’ 25 goals on the weekend, including a four-goal performance against the Wolves Friday. Natalie Orellana and Rofyda Khaleel each had four goals throughout the weekend while Nicole Gauvin found the back of the net three times and Ayla Taller scored twice.
“It was definitely a lot faster than I’ve played before,” Horsley added. “Some teams were a lot more competitive than others, but it was definitely fun, very fast-paced game.”
The wins put the Huskies in a comfortable position heading into the second North Regional, scheduled for late February in Grande Prairie. Ranking second in the North Division, the Huskies trail the Ooks by just three points for first place and have an eight-point advantage on the fourth-place Eagles.
“We have an idea what we have to focus on for each team,” Andersson added of the month break between tournaments. “Our goals is to come out with five wins.”
The second ACAC North Regional Tournament will take place from February 21-23, hosted by Northwestern Polytechnic.
