Women's Basketball Huskies split final home weekend of first semester
The Keyano Huskies Women’s Basketball team kept things steady this past weekend, earning another split from a pair of games against the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference’s (ACAC) South Division.
Friday, the Huskies bucked a trend of back-to-back losses in weekend-opening games with a 60-35 result on the home court against the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks, never trailing in the game. Saturday, the Huskies fell by a 57-43 result to the SAIT Trojans.
“I think it was a good weekend; getting the split is kind of what we wanted,” Head Coach Dwyane Vigilance said. “[We’re] working out some kinks still, but I think it was a good weekend for the group.
“I think I’m comfortable with it now’ that’s what I expected. With our young stars, sometimes we’re going to play good, sometimes we’re going to play bad and it’s just part of our girl’s process to get to February.”
Friday, Jaylynn Twin posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Huskies. Fellow starter Emma Tomchuk added 12 points, all from shots beyond the arc, while Danika Cadieux had seven of the Huskies’ 14 points off the bench.
While it was a bit quieter of a night offensively for the likes of Kaylynn Tucker and Maja Besic, who finished with eight and six points respectively, Besic would add 12 rebounds of her own while Tucker’s five steals led all Huskies.
Collectively, the Huskies shot 41.1 percent from the field (23-for-56) to a 27.3 percent (15-for-55) rate by the visiting Kodiaks. Twin and Tucker combined to go a perfect six-for-six on free throws in the game.
Friday’s success translated into a good start for the Huskies even though they ultimately lost. Against the South Division’s top-ranked team, the Huskies opened the game on a 6-0 run before the Trojans answered back.
While the Huskies did shoot better from the field (30.2% to 30.0%), the Huskies couldn’t capitalize from beyond the arc with an 0-10 mark on three-point shots in the game.
Twin led the Huskies with 18 points and added eight rebounds. Tucker recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Besic had 11 rebounds to go with her five points on the night.
“Our group is all about competing and getting that one percent better,” Vigilance continued. “We say that every single day.”
The split brought the Huskies to 5-3 on the season, which solidified them into third place in the ACAC North Division for the time being.
They’ll now head onto the road for another weekend of competition against the South Division, facing off against the Briercrest College Clippers (4-3) and Medicine Hat College Rattlers (3-4) to conclude their first half.
“Going down to Briercrest is going to be tough, but again, I’m about the split so if we can get a split I’ll be happy with that,” Vigilance said.
