Men's Futsal Huskies end regular season on seven-game unbeaten streak; set sights on return to top of ACAC podium
The Keyano Huskies Men’s Futsal team picked up where they left off from the first North Regional Tournament, going 3-0-2 on the second North Regional Tournament to secure their spot at the 2025 ACAC Men’s Futsal Championship.
“It was very similar to the weekend before, but I figure higher attention to detail and better execution and it makes all the difference,” Head Coach Niels Slotboom said. “The month between the two tournaments worked out for us well.
“They refined some of details and get the result that we needed.”
After starting their season with three-straight one-goal losses, the Huskies closed out the first tournament with back-to-back wins and continued to climb the standings Friday.
A 2-2 draw with the host Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves Friday opened the weekend and got better with a 3-1 result over the Lakeland Rustlers.
Saturday’s results were split with another draw and win as they tied the NAIT Ooks 3-3 before earning another 3-1 result, this time over The King’s University Eagles.
Needing a win to officially secure their spot in the top three, the Huskies topped the Portage College Voyageurs 4-3 in Sunday’s regular season finale.
Perhaps most impressive in the weekend’s results was the nine different goal scorers for the Huskies, led by a four-goal performance from Mykyta Kudrin who scored the game-winning goal in Sunday's win.
“That’s the strength of our team in the beginning, even from outdoor we had the same thing where it was never just one guy that’s responsible for all the [scoring],” Slotboom continued. “It makes us very unpredictable, very difficult to stop, because we can roll through our numbers and the level doesn’t drop.”
Now, the eight-time ACAC Champions will get a chance at extending their current run as back-to-back champions. In the meantime, Slotboom will be focusing on making his team prepared for the new challenge ahead as they get ready to face-off against South Division competition for the first time this season.
“We’re going to play some different teams, so that’s one thing,” Slotboom said of next month’s ACAC Championship. “We have to be mindful of that. It’ll be a little bit of paying attention to what they do, but the focus is always on us.
“We’ll refine the way we play and add some new components to it so we have something new to add.”
The 2025 ACAC Men’s Futsal Championship take place March 7-9, 2025 in Lloydminster, Sask., hosted by Lakeland College.
