Huskies top Trojans, advance to ACAC Championship game
The Keyano Huskies Men's Basketball team will play for Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Gold for the third season in a row following a 66-63 win against the SAIT Trojans Friday in Lloydminster, Sask.
Deandre Rowe and DJ Haynes each had 15 points to lead the Huskies while Evan Meyer had 14 points as part of a double-double with 13 rebounds.
After the Huskies bolted out to an 18-10 lead after the first quarter, the Trojans roared back to close the gap to seven at the half and took a five-point lead into the fourth quarter.
Keenan Miller came up big in the final quarter though, scoring seven of his nine points in the final 10 minutes as the Huskies delivered their response. In addition to going a perfect seven-for-seven on free throws in the quarter, the Huskies made nine of 13 shots from the field, including two three-point shots to none from the Trojans.
Two three-point shots were made by Rowe and Tafari Carefoote-Jones in the final two minutes pushed the Huskies ahead for good with a pair of free throws by Haynes with 10 seconds left pushing the game into two-possession territory and out of reach for their previously-undefeated opposition.
The win pushes the Huskies into the ACAC Championship game for the third-straight year and the fourth time in five years.
Saturday's Championship game will tip-off at 6:00pm MT against the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks.
